The Face of Health Reform

“For the hurt of my poor people I am hurt, I mourn, and dismay has taken hold of me. Is there no balm in Gilead? Is there no physician there? Why then has the health of my poor people not been restored?” (Jeremiah 8:21-22)

Thousands of people desperate for care turned out in Los Angeles recently for the nation’s largest free healthcare clinic. The clinic, sponsored by Remote Area Medical, ran from August 11-18 and had the capacity to see 1,500 patients per day. Hundreds of doctors, dentists, optometrists and nurses volunteered their time and services to care for the helpless and hopeless abandoned by our current healthcare system. Beneath the astroturf and townhall spectacles lies the reality that 71 million people in this country are uninsured or underinsured. Below are some of the faces of the healthcare crisis.
