Pastors Call for Climate Legislation

The Future of the Silver State is Green

Pastors Call for Action on Energy and Climate Legislation that meets Nevada’s economic and moral priorities

As faith leaders, we see first-hand how much Nevada’s families are struggling.   Jobs are scarce and foreclosures are abundant.

In a place that has always been famously known for its high hopes and bright lights, too many Nevadans are facing our economic future with dim expectations for themselves and their children.

At the same time we see our national security and environment threatened by America’s continued reliance on oil.

And everywhere the world’s poor are struggling to adapt to more frequent and fierce storms and droughts related to climate change.

Yet there is hope.  It’s not often that our self-interests align with our moral interests, but in this case they do.  The US Senate is working on clean energy and climate legislation that would diversify our economy, bring jobs to Nevada, cut our dependence on oil, and help those at home and abroad who are hardest hit by the effects of climate change.

We applaud Senator Reid’s commitment to pass bi-partisan clean energy legislation that includes support for poor and vulnerable people hit hardest by the energy and climate crisis.  Such legislation will create new jobs, a sustainable economy and help ensure we answer God’s call to care for creation and the least of these among us.

Passing a bi-partisan climate bill is not a roll of the dice, but a guaranteed solution with long-term advantages for our state, our country, and all of God’s children.
